Observe
1.In this picture, I see the Main Street of Selma, Alabama. Considering that this is during the Great Depression, there is a considerable amount of people here. I also see a few people on the right talking, and a magazine stand with many cars next to it on the left. Also, there is a men's clothing store on the right.
2. The first thing I notice in the picture is the large sign that says "Keeble McDaniel Clothing Co. FIXINGS FOR MEN". The reason I think this was the first thing I noticed is because it is a large sign in the center of the picture, and it draws your attention.
6. The words that I see in the image are "Keeble McDaniel Clothing Co. FIXINGS FOR MEN". I assume that this was a sign for a men's clothing store. I also see a sign behind the first sign, but most of the letters are covered. The letters I can see are "IGGLY". I can't think of anything for what type of store this would be.

Reflect
2. One thing that is happening in this image is that a few of the people are talking. They could possibly be discussing what's going on during the Great Depression, if that was the era this photograph was taken in. Another thing that is happening in this image is that people are looking in the windows of the stores.
3. I think that this image was made during the later part of the Great Depression, probably around 1940. One reason I think this is because the picture is black and white. Throughout the early 1900s, black and white photos were used, but color photos became more accessible as time went on. Another reason I think this picture was around 1940 was because of the ways the cars on the left looked. During the late 1930s and early 1940s, cars had high roofs, and the tire guards that were on top of them.
4. I think that the intended audience for this image was anyone who wanted to view the impacts the Great Depression had on main streets of towns across the United States. I think this because there are only a few people on the main street of the town. This represents how bad a condition the entire town is in, if the stores on the town's main street aren't doing well.

Question
What do you wonder about...
2. I wonder what the people in the picture were thinking about in this photo. I also wonder what they were doing in this photo.
3. I wonder what month and year this photograph was taken in.
6. I wonder how many people are in this town. Based on that, is this amount of people on Main Street higher or lower than average?

Observe
1. I see an African-American man and woman who are working on a farm. I see a building in the far back on the left, which is probably where they live. This is in the town of Eutlaw, Alabama.
2. The first thing I notice is how these two people are the only two who are working the entire farm. The reason I think I noticed this first is because they are taller than anything else in the picture.
5. The physical setting of this photograph is a farm in Eutlaw, Alabama. Based on how much light is in this photograph, I would assume that it is daytime.

Reflect
2. One thing that is happening in this image is that an African-American man and woman are hoeing crops, and it is most likely on their farm. If that is not their farm, then they are probably working for another person.
3. I think that this photo was made in July of 1936.
6. By examining this picture, I can learn that people started to be less discriminatory towards African-Americans. Although this was about 80 years after the Civil War and the end of slavery in the United States, people were still racist. However, African-Americans started to gain more rights, which they should've been granted in the first place. This photo shows this because African-Americans used to not be able to own land, but this photograph shows that they could.

Question
What do you wonder about...
2. I wonder what the relation between these two people are.
4. I wonder where in Alabama this farm is.
5. I wonder why they are the only two people working on the farm at the time this picture was taken.

Observe
1. I see four children, three girls and one boy. They seem to be standing in front of a stall. The girls look happy, but the boy looks sad.
2. The first thing I noticed was that none of the children have shoes. It could be that they simply took them off before the photo, but it could also be that their family could not afford them.
5. The physical setting of this photograph is Greensboro, Alabama. This picture was taken during the daytime.

Reflect
2. One thing that is happening in this image is that four children, three girls and one boy, are lined up in front of a stall so their picture can be taken. Another thing that is happening is that the three girls are smiling and look happy, but the boy is frowning and looks sad.
3. I think that this photograph was taken during June of 1936.
8. If someone made this photograph today, one thing that would be different is that it would probably be in color. Another thing that would be different is that the children probably wouldn't wear the same clothes, because people change the way they want to look over time.

Question
What do you wonder about...
1. I wonder who these children's parents are
2. I wonder what the girls are smiling about and what the boy is frowning about.
5. I wonder why their parents can't provide them with something as simple as a pair of shoes.

Part B

Bethlehem-Fairfield shipyards, Baltimore, Maryland. A drinking fountain
Bethlehem-Fairfield shipyards, Baltimore, Maryland. A drinking fountain

Observe
1. I see a window with a hole in it, with pipes on the right and a barrel to the left. The words "water", "WHITE", and "SOUP" are all written on the right window pane. A faucet is under the word "water".
2. The first thing I noticed was that the words "water", "SOUP", and "WHITE" were all written on the window. I think I noticed this first because they were large letters that were bold against the light gray window panes.
6. The words that I see are water, white, and soup.

Reflect
1. I think this image was made to represent the segregation between blacks and whites in the 1940s. It clearly has the word "White" next to the water fountain, indicating that it is meant to be used by white people only.
3. I think this image was made during May of 1943.
6. By examining this image, I can learn how blacks and whites were still segregated in 1943, almost 80 years after slavery was abolished. The sign that says "WHITE" signifies that this is a drinking fountain meant for white people.

Question
What do you wonder about...
2. I wonder what the building behind the water fountain is.
4. I wonder where this photograph was taken.
5. I wonder why people were so cruel to others and to go so far as to keep one race's and another's water fountains seperate.

At the bus station in Durham, North Carolina
At the bus station in Durham, North Carolina

Observe
1. I see an African-American man waiting at the train station and looking down at the ground. I also see advertisements on the left, one advertising bingo, the other advertising a magazine about Hitler's Love Life. I see a bus on the right, and a sign at the top that says "Colored Waiting Room".
2. The first thing I noticed was how the African-American man looked angry and somewhat sad as he looked down at the ground.
6. The words that I see are "Colored Waiting Room", "Private Property NO PARKING Driving through or Turning Around", "Bingo Tonite!", "Hitler's Love Life Revealed", and "North Carolina Coach Company".

Reflect
2. One thing that is happening in this image is that an African-American man is looking down at the ground. Also, there are a few people waiting in line for the train. I see a train that is getting ready to drive away on the right.
3. I think that this image was made in May of 1940.
8. If this image was made today, one thing that would be different is that there wouldn't be a sign that said "Colored Waiting Room". Also, there most likely wouldn't be a poster advertising "Hitler's Love Life Revealed".

Question
What do you wonder about...
4. I wonder what town in North Carolina this picture was taken in.
5. I wonder why the man in the picture looks angry yet sad at the same time.
6. I wonder how people could have been so discriminatory and cruel to others only 70 years ago simply because of the way they looked.

A cafe near the tobacco market, Durham, North Carolina
A cafe near the tobacco market, Durham, North Carolina

Observe
1. I see a restaurant that served both white and black people. The name of the restaurant is "Farmer's Cafe". I also see a run down car on the left, and a nice, clean car on the right.
2. The first thing I noticed was that this restaurant served both white and black people. This represents the beginning of how people started to be less cruel and discriminatory towards other races.
6. The words that I see are "FARMERS CAFE", "White", "Colored", "lunches", "Hot Weiners", and "Hamburgers".

Reflect
2. One thing that is happening in this image is that people are eating inside of the Farmers Cafe. Another thing that is happening is segregation, but not as extreme as it typically was. Segregation is occurring in this image because there are seperate doors for white and black people to use.
3. I think this image was made in May of 1940.
6. By examining this image, I can learn about how white people started to slowly accept other races and were less harsh to them. This photograph represents this because they started to allow white and black people in the same restaurant, which used to not be allowed at all before.

Question
What do you wonder about...
1. I wonder who the person standing in the window is.
5. I wonder why there is no one else in the restaurant.
6. I wonder how many people typically come to this restaurant, and if this is on a main street of the town.
